SOUMIA: I JUST WANT TO WRITE...

Reader Soumia describes her path to discovering her goal in life - and her career dream!

Soumia says:
I remember once in primary school when the teacher asked us what we wanted to do in the future and why. Some kids seemed to know exactly what they wanted and answered without even thinking about it, but when it was my turn I didn't know what to say. I tried to think of something, but nothing came, and the teacher looked at me and said, 'You know that a person with no goal will never succeed.' That's when I started trying to figure out my goal in life!

A few years later, in middle school, we began to study a new subject, English. I live in Algeria and Arabic is my first language, so English was something very new. It was my favourite at once and I always had excellent grades, so I began to wonder if English could be my goal. That didn't make sense, as English is just a language... so I used to say I'd be an English teacher. The problem is that teaching really isn't my calling, so I was back to the quest, and because I am quite good at French also I wondered about translating as a career. I just wasn't sure though, and I often wondered if I would ever find my real goal in life.

Then I just grabbed a piece of paper and a pen as I have always done, and began to work things out on paper. I love to write - sometimes I express my feelings through poetry, sometimes I just sit down and write stories and that's the only thing that helps me get rid of the stress and anxiety. I suddenly realised that that piece of paper had been there right since the start... even on that day when the teacher was asking us what our goal was, mine was right in front of me waiting to be noticed. I used to write paragraphs and I remember very well when that same teacher used my paragraph as an example for my classmates to hear.

Now, if anyone asks me what I want to be, I look them in the eyes and say 'A writer,' as simply as that. Writing is something I love to do, something I can see myself doing, and nobody can change my mind about it. I know that I want to write, whether it's novels, poems or something else... I just know I want to convey my thoughts by writing. Why not make the world a better place by sharing love and peace through written words?

Cathy says:
Love this... I too knew from an early age that I wanted to write, even though I wasn't sure I would actually be allowed to do it as a career! What is YOUR dream career? COMMENT BELOW to have your say!

  1. I've been through so many career ideas so far, but they've never stuck for longer than a few months. I used to want to be a fashion designer or makeup artist, but I grew out of my painting-things phase that those ideas came from. I also used to want to be a writer, but it's become more of a hobby over time. I seem to keep my childhood ideas at the back of my mind as hobbies; I still write stories, I take textiles at GCSE and love making clothes, and I've started really caring about fashion in the last few years and love to put outfits together. But the only career idea I've wanted for longer than a year is the one I still have, which is to write and produce songs. I've wanted to work in music for the past five years, and wanted to write songs for about two and a half of them

  2. I'm pretty sure it's 'suddenly' not "sudden;y" - although maybe punctuation replaces letters now, I don't know. I would have probably heard about that though. I would have had a few choice words to say about that!

I wanted to be a writer when I was younger. My P6 teacher even recommended it as a career, she thought I'd make an excellent author and encouraged me to write. But as I grew, my creativity slowly died. I know not why but that's just what happened and I don't know how to get it back. I can't write but I can do the next best thing - correcting other people's writing! I've been accepted on an open learning course for editing and proofreading which I'll start tomorrow. I know my chances of ever getting a job in the field are slim but I've got to give it a shot!

  5. An architect!!!! I guess it's a fairly new thing but one Christmas. I got hold of my mother's decorating magazine and soon became addicted. For a while I wanted to be an interior designer, but when I realised I'd have even more fun designing and building the houses themselves instead of just the inside I started saying I wanted to be an architect. There was only one problem. With only 6 weeks to go until my end of year exams, I realised I'd have to drop out of home economics and switch to TG (technical graphics) (apologies if this doesn't make a whole lot of sense, I live in Ireland where are schooling system is different). Miracle of all miracles, my school let me do it, and I got 92% in my summer exam!!!! I now a fully fledged TG student and I love it. I'm so glad I switched!!

  6. I'm not sure what I'd like to be... writing is definitely something I enjoy, but I also love languages so becoming a translator would really interest me (probably translating books or something like that). I'm also really interested in Ancient History though, so if I go down that route I might like to become an archaeologist... and I would also like to work for Disney some day! :)

  8. I want to write, but I like neurology (the study of the brain) human biology and helping people(like for charity in care homes, etc). I also like singing and trampolining but I don't think I'm good enough or committed enough to them two....who knows? I've got a very varied personality! Some of my friends know what they want to do- one wants to be a singer, another wants to be a palaentologist. Another wants to also write, or act, or bake. Another wants to be an actress....but fate takes us where it takes us!

  9. Ever since I was ten, I always knew I wanted to be a writer. I love writing stories, but I get teased a bit at school when I write too much, which is ridiculous. My ex-best friend wants to be a dancer, but she only says that to look cool. Only it isn't cool, it's downright stupid, because she can't dance to save her life! My other friend wants to be a photographer, because she's brilliant at taking photographs. Another wants to act or dance, and she does this professional dance class on a Saturday.
